Last weekend, the team from the University of Cologne, representing the Institute for Air Law, Space Law and Cyber Law, had the incredible opportunity to participate in the semi-finals of the 16th Sarin Leiden International Air Law Moot Court competition, hosted at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Across four intense and inspiring rounds, our team of Ebrar Ekinci and Florian Droste argued before distinguished judges, simulating a case before the International Court of Justice. The experience was both challenging and deeply rewarding, pushing the team to refine their legal skills and expand their understanding of international Air Law.
It was a great honour for the team to present their case before a panel of eminent scholars and leading practitioners from the aviation sector. Beyond the courtroom, the event offered countless chances to connect—with the judges, other teams, and the broader legal community. A particular highlight was the unforgettable gala at the Acropolis Museum, where the team got to meet and discuss with the judges and participants in a truly extraordinary setting.
The journey began early last August in preparation for the release of the case in October 2024 and included countless hours in which the Ebrar and Florian familiarised themselves with the unique Air Law issues before subsequently drafting the memorials and pleadings. This year’s case revolved around Sustainable Aviation Fuels and their role in the ICAO CORSIA SARPs – an incredibly relevant and important topic. The case equally gave rise to issues of the jurisdiction of the ICAO Council under the Chicago Convention and arbitration clauses in Air Service Agreements.
We are deeply grateful to the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden University and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens for organizing such an impressive and inspiring event. We also want to thank all the participating teams for the fair, collegial, and truly memorable exchanges we shared. We are looking forward to meeting you all again!
And above all, a heartfelt thank-you to the judges for their time, expertise, and commitment to shaping the next generation of aviation law professionals. This experience will stay with the team for a long time.
