Space Law Moot Court Team
For the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition 2015 the Institut for Air and Space Law is represented by Bernd Weidner, Luisa Folkmann und Tobias Schlüter (f.l.t.r).
Tobias Schlüter studies law in the 5th semester at the University of Cologne. He took his final exams in 2013 at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Radevormwald. During his studies, he completed an internship at a notary's office, which enabled him to gain insight into the legal field.
After successfully contesting in numerous competitions during his school time, like the physics competition "Bergischer Physikpreis", the debating competition for young people "Jugend debattiert", and the history competition of the German state president "Geschichtswettbewerb des Bundespräsidenten", he was allowed to participate in the youth parliament of Northrhine-Westfalia "Jugendlandtag NRW" in 2013. As part of this simulation the participants take on the roles of deputies to gain insight into the entire legislative process, including political groups and committee work. This experience has strenghtened his fascination for legal issues and encouraged him in his determination to study law. In addition to his regular studies, Tobias also prepares for the Certificate in United States Law (CUSL).
Politically he is furthermore committed as deputy chairman of the Junge Union Radevormwald and as member of the CDU.
He became a participant of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition because of his interest in international law, as well as in the exploration of young and still very abstract fields of law, such as space law. Gaining further practical experience during the intensive study of legal problems, is also a positive side effect for him.
Luisa Folkmann studies law in the 3rd semester at the University of Cologne. During her time at high school in Leverkusen, she attended bilingual classes in English until her final exams in 2014. Two internships at the district court in Bonn strengthened her interest in law and supported her decision to continue studies in this field of education.
When Luisa Folkmann became a student of the University of Cologne in 2014, she was awarded a monthly talent scholarship from the German Government ("Deutschlandstipendium") to support her studies. In order to improve her knowledge in English and to learn about a foreign system of law, Luisa attends courses of the CUSL (Certificate of United States Law)-programme provided by the University of Cologne.
Following her general interest in international law, Luisa Folkmann applied for the Manfred Lachs Moot Court, and after her acceptance began her studies on space law. As an introduction to this new topic, she attended the 2015 Summer School of ECSL (European Centre for Space Law) in Caen, France, where she was able to learn a lot about this specific field of law.
Bernd Weidner studies law in the 7th semester at the University of Cologne. Parallel to his regular studies he completes the CUSL-programme (Certificate for United States Law). In summer 2015 he participated in the ECSL (European Centre for Space Law) "summer course" in Caen. His interest in the Manfred Lachs Moot Court results from the international reference of the topic public international law as well as the linguistic challenge and the team work.
